Hornbill festival of Nagaland
Nagaland, situated in the North-eastern part of India is rich in cultural heritange and scenic beauty. Nagaland is place of diverse tribal culture. There are 16 tribes and sub-tribes living in Nagaland. The tribes of Nagaland rejoice their festivals with vehemence. Most of the festivals are based on agriculture as about 60% of the population depends on agriculture. They consider their festivals sacrosanct and so chipping in in these festivals is obligatory. Some of the significant festivals celebrated are: Tsukhenyie by the Chakhesangs in January, Mimkut by the Kukis in January, Bushu by the Kacharis in January, Sekrenyi by the Angamis in February, Aoling by the Konyaks in April, Moatsu by the Aos in May, Tuluni by the Sumis in July, Nyaknylum by the Changs in July, Tokhu Emong by the Lothas in November and Yemshe by the Pochurys in October.
The Hornbill Festival is a remarkable endeavor of Government of Nagaland to persuade inter-tribal relations and to prop up cultural heritage of Nagaland. It is held in the first week of December. It is organized by the State Directorate of Tourism, Nagaland which exhibits a blend of culture under one roof. Hornbill Festival is held at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama which is about 12 km from Kohima. All the tribes of Nagaland play a part in in this festival. The festival aspires to revitalize and shield the rich ethnicity of Nagaland and exhibits its burlesque and traditions. Nagaland is capable of offering a rich fare to tourists during this festival.
The Festival is named after the hornbill, the bird that is respected worldwide and which is presented in folklore in most of the state’s tribes. The week long festival unites one and all in Nagaland and people take pleasure in the vibrant feat and also religious ceremonies. Conventional arts which embrace paintings, wood carvings, and sculptures are also put on show. The tourist attractions of the festival include Customary Naga Morungs Exhibition cum sale of Arts and Crafts, Food Stalls, Herbal Medicine Stalls, Flower shows and sales, Cultural Medley-songs and dances, Fashion shows, Beauty Contest, Traditional Archery, Naga wrestling, Indigenous Games, and Musical Concert.
