Default IAS examinations and selection of bureaucrats

The declaration of the results of Indian Administrative Services Examinations by UPSC has created much impact on the people of India. The bureaucrats are at the helm of the administration of our country. And this exam offers us one more batch of bureaucrats to serve our country.

But the issue is that is this examination selecting the capable administrators of our country. Scoring good marks in examination does not mean that he or she will be a good administrator of our country. What we like to say that the examination should be based on the aptitude test. The examination should screen the students on the basis of the aptitude that they should have to be a successful administrator. By simply selecting two irrelevant optional subjects and scoring well in these two subjects the students are qualifying this exam. But the fact is that most of these subjects have nothing to do with public administration. Most of the students waste time and effort by studying some subjects that are not going to be a part of the career that they aspire to undertake.

A common syllabus that will be based on general awareness, governance and aptitude is the need of the day. It will help the students who are wasting years after years by studying irrelevant subjects that are not going to help them in any way when they become civil servants. The examinations should be based on aptitude. Not on book centric or a subject centric knowledge.

Default IAS examinations and selection of bureaucrats

    Hi,
India is a large country housing more than one billion people. We have a wide variety of regional and national interests, many of them often conflicting such as infrastructure development and conservation of environment. We need administrators who can at least interact and appreciate the views expressed by the experts in different fields. Thus pusuit of any field of study as a stepping stone to the IAS cadre shall not be viewed as waste of time and effort. However, periodical review and revision of selection procedure are essential to ensure recuitment of the right candidates.
