    Default Dowry Prohibition Act 1961

Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 was enacted inorder to deal with one of the most prevelant social evil in India i.e. Dowry. But the most important question that arises Is this act able to put an end to this social evil? Are the married women who are most often subjected to domestic violence at her matrimonial house being protected? According Section 3 of this act giving and taking of dowry is a criminal offence. How far is it relevant?

    @ Gargee

Well, though we have this prohibition act, barely anyone puts it into use. Dowry system is rampant and relevant in today's India. Though the rural areas are totally engulfed in this system, even urban class families practice this and some of them even create domestic violence for the want of more dowry. I think we should not fall back in putting this act into use, at the same time we expect judiciary and police official to take fast action on such cases.

I agree with you. Dowry prohibition act is merely an act and no one in the society has ever put it in use to curb the deep rooted evil from society. Dowry death are now-a-days a frequent cases which are being reported in the newspapers. Dowry leads to a number of sucide cases, domestic violence and a lot more. Just by making a law is not an end to everything. It should be put into practice with zeal and enthusiaism.
