6 months at least! Breast feeding is very important for the infant and mothers should feed their baby for at least 6 months as mother milk contains all the vitamins, nutrients and minerals required for the baby's growth. Mothers should take a special care for their baby when they are small child. She should feed for minimum 6 months and maximum 3 years. It is good for the baby as a whole. Some women feel shy or do not want to breast feed due to silly reasons.

In my view the breast feeding should be stopped at the age of 10 months to 1 year because beyond that i would be wise to feed the baby with external nutrients. However breast feeding should be practiced by every women because it is very healthy for the baby to get breast fed as the mother's milk contains lot of proteins, vitamins, immunoglobins, fat, lactose, minerals etc which are exclusive to the mother's milk.

@greatindia: I do not agree with this statement. there are many benefits of breast feeding even after the age of 1 year as child remains healthy if he or she drinks mothers milk till 2 to 3 years at least. I believe that all the required nutrients are there in the mothers milk that outside food cannot fulfill. So mothers milk is always best!

Mothers Should Breast Feed Their Babies: Newly born Indian babies are detected with iodine-deficiency, cancer, malnutrition, hepatitis, filaria, immunity troubles, etc. Such diseases are passed to the babies from their mother's wombs. A pregnant women must take great care of her health, opt for breast feeding, as IGE the protein responsible for body's immunity develops from breast-feeding only.
