Thread: Why only Cricket?

Most of the Indians talk about cricket as the best sports and they take active participation in the game. Why don’t they show ay interest in football or Hockey? What the reason behind people knowing hell lot of things about cricket is unlike very few know about hockey or football. Even auto drivers in India are aware of pitch condition and analyze it's affect on the match but personally I never saw any auto driver talking about hockey matches as its been our national game.

Cricket is popular among indians since ages and you can say from the time of Britishers who rules the country for 300 years. Cricket is the game of England and hence it is there since the time of British rule in india. It was then played as a hobby by those people who ruled us but now it has become one of the major game that people cannot actually do without when any match is coming. Hockey is the national game still it needs recognition which is indeed a matter of shame.

So what? If this game is popular that does not mean at all that you will ignore or avoid the national game. Does a mother avoid her first child or differentiate between them? never! I guess this is all in the mind and the mistake of government that is not taking any initiative to make the game popular. Hockey should be made compulsory in the schools and govt must give funds to the people and organizations to give importance to hockey in place of cricket. Proper tournaments should be there.

@economist: I guess you are being hyper. but anyway the topic is indeed a matter of concern as it is the matter of india's national game Hockey. Look, people throw or bet money on the game or thing or person who is popular. Who would want to share the views or bet on those things or games which have no popularity or they are just for name sake? So Cricket is popular as we all know and people are showing their interest towards the game clearly indicates that people want to play and see cricket than hockey or any other indian game.

Most of the Indians are interested only and only in cricket. Cricket is making huge money for India through IPL series. BCCI is considered as the richest cricket council in world. Cricketers earn a lot of money on field and great amount of money from off t field. We can find people playing cricket in every part of india. Hence cricket has been loved by Indians before and will be always a loving game.

I guess there are many reasons why people are encouraging and are forced to play cricket in india and i think the above mentioned reason by khushboo is the apt one! Cricket fetches good money to the players in and off the field and after winning the world cup the demand of these players rises high along with their international popularity. So these are the main and unavoidable reasons of the hype of cricket.

Day by day cricket is losing fans in India. Ipl created a lot of money for everyone from cricketers to business magnets. Being a lot of money playing in sport, cricket has become a commercial business right now. If there is any other sport, which is charismatic national team will definitely develop.

Why only cricket? It is all because there's no other game in India which can perform well on international level. May be hockey and Badminton show a good sporting spirit? But cricket is always the best sport for Indian folks. People in India are very educated in cricket sport and even they can give commentary and suggestion about the game to his fellow watching person. still I prefer that other games should be encouraged.

People in India like to watch cricket and interested to play cricket. There's no other means in people's choice to entertain themselves. The thing is that, after Indian cricket team won world cup in lords defeating mighty West Indies has created an enthusiasm in cricketing fans as well as the unknown to follow cricket. But things are changing very rapidly, people are feeling little annoyed with boring ODI and Test cricket.

Cricket is like a passion for indian peoples,in india its not play like game..its play like emotions...so that's why cricket popular among Indians.basically indians are attached with cricket with time of british...Cricket is the game of England and hence it is there since the time of British rule in india..In india cricket is hobby of many peoples..so we can say that the main reason is that sachin is role model of many of them..even hockey is over national game..but not so much popular...
