It is not that necesary to get all the documents when you are traveling to india. But obtaining necessary documents for Indian travel is quite important. The Indian consulate does not allow Visa on arrival purposes so each tourist must carry a valid passport along with a valid Visa to show at the airport for gaining entry into India.

@sweetangel: quite right. I am sorry but it is a fact that people in India always thinks that foreigner coming to India are the rich peoples. They are always looking to snatch things off from them. Carrying all papers is always a dangerous thing for a foreigner in India.

@livelyfire: what ever the reason is but the documentation is indeed important to carry for these foreigners as you never know when they require this at what point of time. Security in india is quite lenient but the problem may occur any time. In fact if you also go to other country then always carry a photocopy of the documents with you along with the originals one which are required.

I think just a passport and a valid visa is enough to carry along with. However keeping the chances of items being stolen or lost somewhere, it is imperative that one carries only the photo copies of the same along with them instead of carrying the originals. And these are only required at Airports, Railway stations if you are traveling and also when you book a room in a hotel. Otherwise there is no need to carry any documents.

The most essential documents for Indian travel are passport and visa along with their photocopies. One should make sure that they have these basic documents with them all the time. Before the trip starts traveler should check that passport is in order and will be valid for the period of stay or not. If not then one should get renewed.
